I have always been a big fan of Aamir Khan movies. His scripts, acting, and unique topics are a much-needed change from the typical Bollywood entertainers. Also, Taare Zameen Par is still my all-time favorite Bollywood movie. It makes me nostalgic and emotional every time I watch it. So when Sitaare Zameen Par was announced, I was equally excited! It is not a direct sequel of the previous movie, but I was intrigued to see how Aamir Khan would bring something new to the table. The packed theater buzzed with excitement. Directed by R.S. Prasanna, the movie has a solid cast of Aamir Khan and Genelia Deshmukh in the lead.
Sitaare Zameen Par is the official remake of the Spanish film Campeones(2018), but its set firmly in the Indian context. The story centers on Gulshan Arora(Aamir Khan), a brash and self-centered assistant basketball coach who is ordered to do community service by coaching a basketball team of intellectually disabled people. At first, Gulshan is rude, impatient, and even insulting to everyone around him. But slowly, he grows fond of his team. The entire movie is based on Aamirs transformation from an arrogant and brash coach to a caring, empathetic, and loving person.
Speaking of performances, Aamir is absolutely at his best. I almost got transported to 2007 when he starred in Taare Zameen Par. His transformation feels natural and not forced. Also, there arent any unnecessary or cliched Bollywood dialogues that ruin the tone of the movie. His chemistry with the rest of the cast is effortless, especially with Genelia Deshmukh, who plays his wife, Suneeta. Genelia makes a strong comeback to Hindi cinema here. She is supportive and caring, and both have a fun relationship. Also, special shout out to all the people in the basketball team, who work along really well and are fine actors.
Sitaare Zameen Par focuses more on human relationships than climax or thrill. With so many different themes explored, this movie is about embracing the slow narrative rather than waiting for plot twists. There are plenty of scenes that will make you smile, laugh, and even shed a tear. However, I still feel the movie could have been faster, especially in the second half. There are too many subplots. Also, apart from Aamir, not all characters are explored in depth. Moreover, the music of Taare Zameen Par was much better and memorable.
All-in-all, this movie wont disappoint you. Aamir Khan and his acting is flawless and he makes the script watchable. The movies message of inclusivity is timely and important. If you are not used to slow movies, then this could feel a bit stretched. But I feel if you loved Taare Zameen Par, you will like this one too. Its a movie that will make you laugh, cry, and, most importantly, think.
